TATTOOISTS STEPPED OUT FROM THE SHADOWS

Viyah Lee ever seen her five tattoos as secret badges of rebellion: a sol lock in her name in leopard spots on her left hip, wrist and images on both ankles.

Now the 26 year old former model, ready to come out of the shadows. Against long-held prejudices and regulations only physicians can do this, Lee designed the tattoo for himself and intends to place prominent tattoo on her neck or shoulders.

"But this is art, not a medical procedure. Doctors are not artists, "Lee said.

Lee is part of a campaign to change the old perception of Koreans about tattoos, long been regarded as only for gangsters.

When young people are increasingly impassioned water tattoo and consider it a fashion statement, the tattoo artist is calling on lawmakers amend a 2001 law which stipulates that this is a medical procedure.

"We are on track," Kang Un, 38, director of the Korean Association said tattoo. He estimated that about 22,000 illegal tattoo artists in this country. "Between law and practice is a big gap," Kang said.

Only a few generations ago, about tattoos are taboo because it goes against the teachings of Confucianism, that one must cherish your body. Even a curse: "You should be tattooed!". In the 1980s, the Korean government arrested the man with a tattoo on the assumption they are related to illegal activities.

Under Korean law, people with tattoos and too obvious to not be allowed to join the army because they can make the team "haters". Many tattoo artists arrested for tattoos for those who are about to join the army so that they avoid conscription.

Tattoo industry lurks underground activity. Most slapped no signs to avoid police detection. These facilities will be revealed all machines confiscated and fines up to $ 10,000.

Kang says tattoos are promoted in 2003 when in a soccer match against South Korea and Japan, the Korean player Ahn Jung-hwan threw off his shirt after scoring to reveal tattoos on both shoulders. Photos that were broadcast on national television.

"It shows the tattoos are not criminals or thugs. This is the legendary British sport, "Kang said.

Cho Hyun-soul, a professor at Seoul National University and is author of "The History of Tattooing", said that the attitude of the people of this country are changing. "This should be legalized and accepted in Korea," he said.

For Viyah Lee, the acceptance came very slowly. At first her parents vehemently opposed tattoo on her ankle with the words "Glory to God".

"My dad did not even say anything, which means that he was extremely angry. My mother told me to hospital delete it. I told her that it was expensive to remove than tattoos, "Lee recalled.

From time to time after Lee became the tattoo artist, her father bought for $ 500 cartridge. "At the beginning we opposed her choice, but gradually support it. He has a passion for this subject and now we respect its job, "Ms Park Jong-Shil, Lee's mother, said.
